“The Reindeer Tribe of Taiga Foundation” is an initiative by Nomadic Trails. The purpose of the foundation is to support and help the Reindeer people, the community in the Taiga of Mongolia. In short, it is a Foundation to aid the Reindeer People.
Organizational Background
““Reindeer Tribe of Taiga” is a registered, grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to supporting the Dukha, or Reindeer People, of the Taiga. As an operational NGO, our focus is on implementing projects that directly benefit the community. Our work involves extensive planning, clear communication, and strong partnerships with local stakeholders to ensure sustainable impact.
Amid the growing challenges faced by the Dukha in the Taiga region, we are committed to long-term projects aimed at supporting this unique community. Our initiatives focus on enhancing economic opportunities, preserving the Dukha’s nomadic reindeer herding culture, and expanding access to health, education, and community empowerment resources.
Dukha People
The Dukha, also known as the Tsaatan or Tsaachin in Mongolian, are often referred to as the “Reindeer Tribe” of Mongolia. In our projects, we use the term “Dukha” to honor their unique cultural identity.
Our organization is dedicated to advancing the following key goals:
-
Health and Education: Improving access to healthcare and educational opportunities for the Dukha community.
-
Economic Opportunities: Creating sustainable job opportunities for Dukha men and women to support their livelihood.
-
Reindeer Health and Welfare: Ensuring the well-being of reindeer, which are central to the Dukha’s way of life.
This proposal outlines our plan to further these objectives and strengthen our impact.

Problem Statement
The Dukha community faces significant health challenges due to limited access to medical care. Common issues include high blood pressure, dental problems, and women’s health concerns, which go largely untreated due to the lack of healthcare services in the region.
In addition, the rise of exploitative tourism in the Taiga region often has harmful impacts on the Dukha people and their environment, with minimal benefit to the community. This unsustainable tourism model threatens their cultural heritage and natural resources.
Furthermore, Mongolian reindeer are increasingly vulnerable to diseases and pathogens commonly found in other domestic livestock, to which they have limited natural immunity. Regular health assessments are essential to monitor their well-being, identify prevalent issues, and ensure reindeer health—a critical aspect of preserving the Dukha’s traditional lifestyle.
Measures to Support the Reindeer People
To address the health challenges faced by the Dukha community, the foundation selects two reindeer herders each year to receive comprehensive medical evaluations and treatments in Ulaanbaatar, fully funded by the foundation.
Additionally, we collect gifts and donations throughout the year to distribute to the local community, supporting them in various ways. For the children of the reindeer herders who are new to school, we provide a full year’s worth of school supplies, including school bags, notebooks, and stationery, to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed.
How to Help the Reindeer Tribe of Mongolia
The Reindeer Tribe, or the Dukha people, are a unique and endangered community with a deep cultural heritage tied to their reindeer herding lifestyle in the Mongolian Taiga. Supporting the Dukha community not only preserves their traditions but also ensures the welfare of the reindeer on which their culture depends. Here are meaningful ways you can help make a difference:
1. Contribute to Health and Education Initiatives
The foundation offers medical check-ups and treatments for selected Dukha herders each year. You can support these efforts by donating directly to the foundation, helping us cover the costs of travel, medical assessments, and treatments for more community members. Contributions also fund essential educational supplies, including school bags, notebooks, and stationery, to help young Dukha children succeed in school and transition smoothly into an educational environment.
2. Promote Ethical Tourism
Sustainable and respectful tourism is crucial to preserving the Dukha’s way of life and minimizing the impact on their natural environment. By choosing to travel responsibly, you can help reduce the strain on their resources and contribute positively to their economy. Look for tour operators who partner with the Dukha, support ethical tourism practices, and prioritize cultural respect and environmental responsibility.
3. Purchase Local Handcrafted Goods
A direct way to support the Dukha community is by purchasing handcrafted items made by the locals. Many Dukha artisans create beautiful, authentic items, including carvings from reindeer antlers, traditional clothing, and other handicrafts. These items make unique souvenirs, and the funds go directly to the families who create them, helping them sustain their livelihoods.
4. Buy “Mongolian Taiga Inspired Me” Bags
During your visit to the Reindeer Tribe camp, you can purchase a “Mongolian Taiga Inspired Me” bag for 30,000 MNT (approximately 15 USD). This bag is more than a keepsake—it’s a symbol of your support. All proceeds go directly into the foundation, funding ongoing projects in health, education, and cultural preservation for the Dukha community.
5. Sponsor a Reindeer
Reindeer are the heart of the Dukha’s culture and survival. They face increasing risks of disease from interactions with domestic livestock. Through a reindeer sponsorship, you can help fund regular veterinary checks and treatments for these animals, ensuring their health and longevity. Sponsorship helps provide necessary vaccinations, diagnostic tests, and nutritional support for reindeer herds, which in turn supports the well-being of the entire Dukha community.
6. Donate to Community Projects
You can make a one-time donation or become a regular contributor to community projects managed by the foundation. Your donations will directly support initiatives like healthcare outreach, educational programs, community workshops, and environmental conservation efforts in the Taiga region. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a meaningful impact.
7. Spread Awareness
One of the most valuable ways to support the Dukha is by raising awareness. Share information about the Reindeer Tribe, their unique culture, and the challenges they face. Encourage others to visit ethically, support local crafts, and consider donating. By telling others about the Dukha, you help expand their support network and bring attention to their pressing needs.
Supporting the Dukha people of Mongolia not only helps preserve a distinctive cultural heritage but also enriches the lives of a resilient community whose relationship with nature is unlike any other. Together, we can help the Dukha thrive while respecting and protecting their traditions.
But first, visit the Reindeer Tribe and be a part of their culture on our “Dukha Reindeer Herders Tour” and “Winter Reindeer Herders Tour“.
How to Help Support the Reindeer
The reindeer are at the heart of the Dukha way of life. They provide transportation, milk, materials for clothing, and play a central role in the Dukha’s spiritual and cultural identity. However, reindeer face challenges such as exposure to new diseases from domestic livestock and environmental pressures that threaten their well-being. Here are ways you can directly support the reindeer and ensure their continued role in this unique culture:
1. Support Veterinary Care and Health Programs
One of the most pressing needs for the reindeer is regular veterinary care to prevent and treat diseases. Unlike many domestic animals, reindeer have little immunity to livestock-borne illnesses, so regular check-ups and vaccinations are essential. By contributing to health programs, you help fund medical examinations, vaccinations, and treatments to maintain herd health. This support not only benefits the reindeer but also protects the livelihood of the Dukha people who rely on these animals.
2. Sponsor a Reindeer
Sponsoring a reindeer allows you to contribute directly to the care of an individual animal. Sponsorship funds are used to cover the cost of food supplements, health checks, and any necessary treatments throughout the year. When you sponsor a reindeer, you will receive updates about the herd and information on how your support is making a difference. It’s a meaningful way to create a personal connection with the reindeer while helping maintain the health of the herd.
3. Contribute to Sustainable Feeding Programs
In the winter, food can become scarce, and reindeer often need additional nutritional support to survive harsh conditions. By donating to feeding programs, you help provide vital food supplies to the reindeer, ensuring they remain healthy and well-nourished during the colder months. This support reduces the need for the Dukha to migrate to more distant pastures and keeps the herds safe and closer to their caretakers.
4. Assist with Equipment and Shelter
Essential supplies like winter blankets, harnesses, and other protective equipment help keep the reindeer safe and comfortable throughout the year. Donations toward these items allow the Dukha herders to equip their reindeer with weather-resistant gear, making it easier to manage the herd and keep the animals safe from the elements.
5. Participate in Awareness and Advocacy
By spreading awareness about the reindeer and their importance to the Dukha, you help bring attention to their needs and challenges. Share information about the Reindeer Tribe and their reindeer herding practices with others to inspire more people to support these essential programs. Advocacy efforts can attract more resources and help protect the cultural and environmental factors that impact the health of the herds.
6. Choose Ethical Tourism Practices
When visiting the Dukha community, choose activities and tour providers that prioritize the well-being of the reindeer. Respectfully observe the animals, follow the guidance of local herders, and avoid activities that may stress or harm the reindeer. Ethical tourism helps protect the reindeer’s natural environment and ensures that tourism benefits the Dukha and their animals.
