Ongi ruined monastery complex is located halfway from any traveler’s journey to and back from the Gobi and makes a very convenient if unique spot.
The small temple of the ruined monastery complex, which was reconstructed in the 1990s, is a must-visit destination. The complex housed over 1000 lamas once since 1660 settled by both banks of the Ongi River. It said 4 Buddhist universities were running their own activities over the years.
The whole complex was destroyed and over 200 lamas were executed and others imprisoned by communists in 1939.
