Who are the Tsaatan?
The Tsaatan are Mongolia’s only reindeer herders. “Tsaatan” means reindeer owner, while “Dukha” translates to “Reindeer Herder.”
Their ancestry is linked to the Uigur people, and their language is of Ancient Turkic origin, though only around 600 speakers remain.
They have preserved their traditions for centuries, living a nomadic lifestyle in harmony with the Taiga forests.
East and West Taiga
The Tsaatan tribe is divided into two regions, primarily based on camping locations rather than cultural differences:
East Taiga:
Located on the eastern bank of the Shishged River.
Settled here when river crossings during summer were difficult.
West Taiga:
Located on the western bank of the Shishged River.
Each region has designated campsites for visitors.
Tip: You can choose to visit either East or West Taiga depending on your preferences and tour arrangements.

Where Are the Reindeer Herders Located?
The Tsaatan primarily live in:
Ulaan Uul and Tsagaan Nuur towns in Khuvsgul Province, Northern Mongolia.
During summer, some families temporarily move near Khuvsgul Lake for pasture.
Many Tsaatan have relatives across the Russian border, enriching their unique cultural heritage.
For generations, the Tsaatan people have herded reindeer, passing down their nomadic traditions to their descendants. When you visit the Reindeer Herders in Mongolia, you have the incredible opportunity to be a part of this rich culture and witness their unique way of life.
